Calgary is the largest city in Alberta and one of the biggest cities in the world in terms of its geographic footprint, at over 720 square kilometres. Calgary is a vibrant city made up of 1,065,455 people as of census 2009. The recent influx of migrants and immigrants to Calgary has made the city one of the fastest growing and most diverse cities in North America. The earliest settlers of Calgary were of European origin, and since then, Calgary has been a hub of cultural and ethnic diversity.

Calgary is located within breathtaking sight of the Canadian Rockies. Calgary has a modern and compact downtown core with tall stately skyscrapers on the edge of the rich blue of the Bow River. Calgary is Canada’s second largest head office city, second only to Toronto. The city is the main headquarters to the oil & gas industry with production closer to Northern Alberta, and is the centre for logistics, agriculture and Southern Alberta tourism.

The city is a magnet for people who love the outdoors, with Fish Creek Provincial Park in the south and Nose Hill Park in the north, and the many beautiful parklands along the banks of the Bow and Elbow rivers. The greatest gift is that it is only an hour’s drive to the scenic beauty of Banff with the Rocky Mountains all around you.

The city’s weather can be unpredictable but usually boasts clear blue skies. It is not uncommon to have a snowfall in July or August because of the close proximity of the mountains as well as the famous Chinook winds which can warm temperatures by 20C within a couple of hours. A common saying in Calgary is “if you don’t like the weather wait 10 minutes”.

Calgary is home to a number of “bedroom communities” located nearby, which attracts residents looking for the urban comforts of Calgary and still experiencing that small town quality of life. To the north is Airdrie, to the west you will find Cochrane and Bragg Creek, to the east are Lake Chestermere and Strathmore, and to the south Okotoks and High River.

No matter what your hobbies or lifestyle dictates Calgary has something for you!
